
ANDAHUAYLILLAS AND RAQCHI
ANDAHUAYLILLAS- For to have to go to visit Andahuaylillas is to have pass
“Rumiqolqa” was once the gigantic stone gateway to the Cusco valley, and we pass
through the narrow valley it guards on our way to the village of Andahuaylillas,
whose famous colonial church is known as the “Sixtine Chapel of the Americas”
one of the most beautiful village in the región, has a picturesque main square
with leafy pisonay trees hanging overhead, which is surrounded by old estates,
its main attraction is its distinctive church. This church was built in the
seventeenth century and its considered to be a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Its interior , elaborately decorated with paintings, is simply breathtaking.It
also houses oil on canvas paintings from the Escuela Cusqueña and Baroque altars
made of carved wood and other art treasures.
RAQCHI Is located on 117 km from the Cusco city on the
road to Puno during the dry season, which corresponds with the tourist high
season, the villagers of Raqchi make beautiful pottery.
The archaeológical site of Raqchi are known as the Temple of
Wiracocha God. Legend has it that the temple was erected to propitiate the
creator god after the area was devastated by a volcanic eruption. The stone of
the district is predominantly volcanic and all the buildings of this place are
mix betwen stone and adobe walls.
The inhabitants of Raqchi are dedicated to the production of
traditional pottery, made by hand and available for visitors to purchase.
