CUSCO
Located in the southeastern part of the Andes, on a elevation 11,400 feet Cusco
is Peru`s main tourist destination and one of the most important in the Americas.
Known by the Incas as the “home of gods”, Cusco became the capital of one of the
largest pre-Columbian empires the Tawantinsuyo (four regions). Legend has it
that the city was founded by Manco Qhapaq and Mama Oqllo.
The architectural legacy of Cusco dates back to the 15th
century and its atributed to the Inca Pachacutec ( 1438-1471), who built the
city`s most remarkable constructions, including fine stone carving and perfect
locking between stone blocks, and the trapezoidal design of entryways.
One of the greatest planned societies the world has know from its rise towards
the end of the 11th century to its death in the early 16th century.
Its name in Quechua, Qosqo means “Navel of the World”, which
derives from when the city served as a hub for a vast network of roads
interconnecting virtually the whole of South America, from the southern part of
present day Colombia to the northern part of what is now Argentina. according to
the Incas, their Holy City and Centre of the ancient Incan civilization, is the
oldest continuously inhabited city of the Western Hemisphere the buildings and
temples you see here rest on foundations laid by the Incas.
